The Meaning of Shukr
Shukr (شكر) is the Arabic word for gratitude but in the Islamic tradition, it carries a depth far beyond a simple "thank you." Shukr is a state of the heart, a recognition that every blessing comes from Allah (SWT), and a commitment to use those blessings in His obedience.
The word appears over 75 times in the Quran, making it one of the most emphasized virtues in Islam. Allah (SWT) says:
"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]." Surah Ibrahim (14:7)
Shukr in the Quran
Gratitude in Islam is not passive it is active. The Quran describes three dimensions of Shukr:
- Shukr of the heart (Qalb): Recognising that all blessings come from Allah alone.
- Shukr of the tongue (Lisan): Expressing praise, saying Alhamdulillah, thanking others.
- Shukr of the limbs (Jawarih): Using your body, wealth, and time in ways that please Allah.
True Shukr encompasses all three. It is a complete orientation of the self toward gratitude.
The Prophet ﷺ on Gratitude
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah." (Abu Dawud). Gratitude, in Islam, begins with Allah and flows outward to parents, teachers, friends, and all who do good.
He ﷺ also said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him." (Muslim)
